C.B.D. for the D.O.G.?
We’ve heard for a while now that medicinal marijuana and cannabis oil can be beneficial for our health, specifically in terms of pain management, anxiety, and nausea, so it stands to reason that it could do the same for our pets, right?
Research
The jury seems to be out on that one, mainly because there just hasn’t been enough documented, validated studies done to support it. Although the few small studies that have been done have had good results (see Globe and Mail Article), it has not been done on a large enough sample size to be considered reputable and it’s worth consulting with your vet first.
The current anecdotal benefits – as outlined in the Canine Journal – include:
- Anxiety and stress
- Moderate to severe pain
- Chronic inflammation
- Arthritis & joint pain
- Epileptic seizures
- Digestion problems
- Nausea
- Symptoms from cancer

What you need to know
- THC can be extremely harmful to pets so you need to be careful not to give Fido that kind of medicine… don’t simply share your stash from home.
- CBD for pets is not covered under the Cannabis Act and so it is a bit of a legal grey area.
- Because it has not been approved by Health Canada for pets, there are not currently any regulations in place to assure safe distribution… but there are 17 Health Canada approved studies in the works (see CBC article) paving the way for Veterinarians to prescribe CBD in the future.
What does that mean?
Like all things medical related, it is recommended that you discuss it with your vet before giving this medicine to your pup. They may not be able to prescribe (yet) but they can help you figure out the proper dosage for your pet. Also, be cautious of your CBD oil sources.
Where can you find CBD oil for your pets locally?
There are a few local shops that offer CBD oil. It’s worth calling ahead to see what they have available. Shops include:

Online Options
If you can’t find what you’re looking for locally, there are a few Canadian online options; however, payments are only available via Email Money Transfer after an order has been placed (likely due to that grey area I mentioned), and shipping seems to be $10+. Naturally, it’s worth approaching these with caution.
